Save Terrance Williams - Done

Update 9/28/2012: Execution of Terrance Williams halted after judge says prosecutor suppressed evidence

The supporters are not advocating that Williams be freed. The recommendation is that Gov. Corbett commute Williams’ death sentence to life without parole. The widow of murder victim Amos Norwood is a supporter.

The story:  The leader of Philadelphia Catholics, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, and others contend that jurors in the original trial would have spared Williams’ life had they heard evidence of abuse that might have been a mitigating factor, but wasn’t put before them.  Some jurors have said they voted to condemn Williams on the mistaken belief that state law permitted parole under a life sentence for first-degree murder.

Williams was sexual abused by Norwood since age 13. According to change.org,  "throughout his childhood, Terry suffered prolonged violent physical and sexual abuse from older males. Born into poverty with a violently abusive mother and absent father, Terry faced abuse and neglect in his home that made him vulnerable to sexual predators. He was first raped by an older boy when he was only six years old." After years of suffering unimaginable horrors, when he was 17- and 18-years old, Terry killed these two men who abused him for years– and now faces death.  As a teenager, Terry became acquainted with two middle-aged men who used their influence as a church leader and as a sports booster to get access to young boys.

Terry’s tragic history of abuse was never presented at trial.

Howard Morgan Black Policemen Shot 28 Times By White Police

On April 5, 2012, Howard Morgan is scheduled to be sentenced for crimes he did not commit – place Criminal Court Building, Courtroom 600, 2650 South California, Chicago, IL 60608 at 8:00 a.m. (Please be on time).  How did Morgan get to this point?

Feb 21, 2005, the Chicago Sun-Times reports Howard  Morgan was an off-duty detective for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad when he was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street.  After that the story goes in two different directions.  It ends with Morgan surviving being shot 28 times and now being sentenced for attempted murder.  Morgan is Black and the police who shot him are white.

According to police, Morgan opened fire with his service weapon when officers tried to arrest him, which caused them to shoot him 28 times.  There was no indication Morgan was drunk, on drugs or had a medical condition.  Not sure why Morgan was being arrested since driving wrong way seems to be a traffic issue.   People have made a wrong turn into a street.   A Change.org petition signed by more than 2,600 people called for all charges against Morgan to be dropped, and now Occupy Chicago is getting involved. It’s not the same attention given to Trayvon Martin’s case... perhaps because Morgan was shot by the fellow police – the brotherhood of law enforcement.

Howard Morgan, Black Off-Duty Cop Shot 28 Times By White Chicago Officers, Faces Sentencing - possible 80 years – a lifetime sentence. Some things noted in the article:
Morgan’s van was crushed and destroyed without notice or cause before any forensic investigation could be done.
Howard Morgan was never tested for gun residue to confirm if he even fired a weapon on the morning in question.
The State never produced the actual bullet proof vest worn by one of the officers who claimed to have allegedly taken a shot directly into the vest on the morning in question. The State only produced a replica.
Howard Morgan will be sentenced Thursday. He faces 80 years in prison.

Trayvon Martin Bring People Together

The tragedy that happened to Trayvon Martin is bring people of all races and colors together, not dividing the country as Gingrich suggested. Trayvon is the face of many parents' children. He represents the high schooler and college student parents worry about when they are not home.

Like many other kids, Trayvon had a Facebook account. Like kids his age, he post pictures and updates. None of that is relevent now that he is dead. The person that shot him didn't know about his Facebook account, so what does it matter. None of the things and events Trayvon did days, weeks or years leading up to his death are relevant unless the shooter had prior knowledge.

What does matter is Trayvon is dead, and a man that didn't know him or about his Facebook account was moved to action. In the article, How one man helped spark online protest in Trayvon Martin case, Kevin Cunningham read about the killing of teenager Trayvon Martin. Cunningham, describes himself as the “super Irish” learned about the Martin case when he read a story posted for Men of Howard. Cunningham joined the  informal fraternity while attending the historically black Howard University as a law student. He had no idea his petition would reach so many so soon and so powerful. "The fact that more than 2 million people have signed this petition shows there are still a lot of good people in this world."
